“New knowledge is the most valuable commodity on earth. The more truth we have to work with, the richer we become.”

-Kurt Vonnegut, Breakfast of Champions

This statement couldn’t be more true, and today was a perfect demonstration of that for me. My aunt had a family friend, Robin come over to the house to clean for some extra money. Robin is very creative and one of the nicest people I’ve ever known, yet her past has debilitated her learning process. As a child, Robin was abused physically and emotionally by her father and older brothers, her mother is an alcoholic who chose to turn the other cheek on her family’s malfunctions. As a result, Robin has been stunted in her reading level, causing her to limit her creativity, knowledge, and overall motivation in regards to what she thinks she is capable of. In my opinion, Robin has let her traumatic childhood affect her self esteem to the point that she thinks she can’t possibly ever read because she’s simply not smart enough. It’s terribly astounding how much the human mind controls a persons life, if only more people understood that they themselves are in the drivers seat.
